Brackley bagged a precious three points in their battle against the drop and damaged Tamworth’s fading hopes of making the play-offs.

Steve Diggin scored twice at a rain-soaked Lamb while Tamworth’s misery was compounded by the second-half sending off of Dan Preston.

Elliott Durrell did convert a 90th minute penalty for the Lambs but they were unable to rescue a point.

A minute’s silence was held before the game got underway to remember Lambs stalwart Ray Jay.

The Lambs responded and Elliott Durrell broke away before firing in a shot which bobbled in front of Hornby, who managed to parry the ball away for a fruitless corner.

Joe Clarke sent an effort over the bar from 30 yards on 28 minutes for the visitors after latching onto Belshaw’s clearance.

The Lambs went close to the opener on 32 minutes as Curtis Strong played in Connor Taylor on the right and his inviting cross into the area just evaded Danny Newton.

It was the visitors who went into the break with the lead, edging ahead on 39 minutes as Diggin slid in to convert David Moyo’s cross from close range.

Tamworth brought Leon Mettam into the fray for the start of the second half and he saw a header saved by Hornby.

At the other end, Clarke blazed a free-kick over the bar before Tamworth were reduced to ten men as Preston saw red.

The Lambs defender had already been booked for a foul on Matt Lowe on 50 minutes before receiving a second yellow on 56 for a trip on Batchelor.

Lowe was twice denied by Belshaw as the visitors looked to make the most of their man advantage.

Tamworth substitute Brandon Fox then set up a half chance for Mettam in the box but the striker’s effort was blocked and the rebound flew over.

The Lambs were still in the contest and Ellis Deeney fired wide from distance while, at the other end, Walker was denied by Belshaw.

The visitors killed the game off in the 87th minute as Lowe had a burst of speed, advanced forward and teed up Diggin who coolly slotted home.

Tamworth did bag a late consolation as Mettam was felled in the area and Durrell slotted home from the spot.
